Barack Hussein Obama, Jr. was born August 4, 1961 and is the junior United States Senator from Illinois and nominee of the Democratic Party in the 2008 presidential election.

He is the first African American to achieve the presidential nomination of any major American political party.

Obama was born to a Kenyan father and an American mother, and he spent most of his childhood and adolescent years in Honolulu, Hawaii.

At age six, Barack Hussein Obama, Jr. moved to Jakarta, Indonesia, where he lived with his mother and Indonesian stepfather for four years.

He graduated from Columbia University and Harvard Law School, and worked as a community organizer, university professor, political activist, and lawyer before serving in the Illinois Senate from 1997 to 2004.

Barack Hussein Obama, Jr. made an unsuccessful bid for a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives in 2000, and then announced his campaign for U.S. Senate in January 2003.

He won a landslide primary victory in March 2004 to become the Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate, and delivered the keynote address at the Democratic National Convention in July 2004.

Barack Hussein Obama, Jr. was elected to the U.S. Senate in November 2004 with 70% of the vote.

Shortly after his election to the U.S. Senate, Obama announced his candidacy for President of the United States, and spent much of his single term in the U.S. Senate on the campaign trail.
